The LandSeaLot Observer – Issue 3 – March 2025

ISSUE 3 – MARCH 2025
LandSeaLot is a Horizon Europe project that seeks to integrate and enhance existing coastal observation efforts – including in-situ, satellite, modelling and citizen science – to better study the land-sea interface area, where terrestrial and marine habitats meet.
Welcome Note: Emilie Breviere

Welcome to the LandSeaLot Observer, Issue 3!
As a first year PhD student working on carbon dioxide fluxes, I was sent to the Southern Ocean with an instrument measuring alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon. Alone, at Christmas time, I had to set up the device on a 65m resupply vessel. I was new to the instrument and to this environment, but eventually I rose to the challenge. In other words, I’ve had my fair share of adjusting sensors to carry out measurements at sea! This first hands-on experience was a completely new, exciting and enlightening experience.
My current work with LandSeaLot focuses on increasing observation capacity. My role is to facilitate the collection of new in situ observations using the emerging field of cost-effective technology: affordable, reliable sensors and other measuring devices that can be deployed in larger numbers and by a greater range of people than traditional observation technology. Cost-effective technology is a potentially revolutionary addition to land-sea interface observation, and we are working to test its potential, develop data management solutions for these emerging data streams and empower citizens to contribute to environmental science.
Over the past few months, sensor developers have expressed great enthusiasm for LandSeaLot — and for a new global initiative: the Solutions for Cost-Effective Ocean Observation Platform (SCOOP). This platform will allow us to connect developers and stakeholders, centralise information and stay updated on the latest sensor developments. It’s also been a joy to discuss and contribute to the specific needs of the LandSeaLot Integration Labs, who are tackling diverse topics and challenges. I can’t wait to see the first results!
Over the coming year, many of the LandSeaLot Integration Labs will be adequately equipped with cost-effective sensors and ready to carry out observations in the field. And we will scale up citizen science activities, supported by the coming launch of the LandSeaLot Citizen Science Hub.
The videos, articles and updates below reflect these exciting developments and more. Read on to explore how our Consortium and partners are observing together.
