Research Infrastructures (RIs) in the marine and fresh-water domains allow multiple countries to come together across national boundaries to work in concert to agreed standards and to pool resources that streamline the efforts of facing common research challenges, including in observing our environment and ensuring the delivery of crucial data. At the heart of LandSeaLot are three key marine RIs: DANUBIUS (river processes), JERICO-RI (river delta, coastal domain) and ICOS-ERIC (sea atmosphere processes). Within the LandSeaLot community, the RIs bring their collective experience to harmonise observing methodologies, enable the integration of different sources of data, and contribute toward the co-creation of a common observation strategy for the land-sea interface area.
DANUBIUS-RI, the International Centre for Advanced Studies on River-Sea Systems, is a pan-European RI comprised of partners in 11 nations. DANUBIUS-RI enables integrated studies of rivers and their catchments, transitional waters such as estuaries, deltas and lagoons, and their adjacent coastal seas. A key goal is to overcome the fragmentation of knowledge in rivers and seas by integrating spatial, temporal, disciplinary and sectorial thinking. Within LandSeaLot, DANUBIUS-RI will offer integrated knowledge to manage and protect river-sea systems, share its interdisciplinary experience and its state-of-the art research infrastructure by its participation in LandSeaLot.
The ICOS-ERIC community consists of more than 500 scientists in both its current member and observer countries and beyond, including more than 80 renowned universities and/or institutes. ICOS-ERIC is rooted in three domains: atmosphere, ecosystem and ocean, and its knowledge supports policy decision-making to combat climate change and its impacts. ICOS-ERIC is pleased to be part of LandSeaLot, acknowledging the importance of supporting greater coordination and collaboration between research infrastructures and projects in the European marine domain.
JERICO-RI is an integrated multidisciplinary and multi-platform RI dedicated to a holistic appraisal of coastal marine system changes. Its community comprises approximately 40 partners, institutes and private companies from across 18 European nations. JERICO-RI’s participation in LandSeaLot underscores its commitment to advancing coastal observation research. From conceptualisation to implementation, JERICO-RI’s expertise will contribute to every facet of the project, supporting its comprehensive and impactful outcomes.
