The LandSeaLot Observer – Issue 6 – January 2026

  • April 20, 2026

ISSUE 6 – January 2026

LandSeaLot is a Horizon Europe project that seeks to integrate and enhance existing coastal observation efforts – including in-situ, satellite, modelling and citizen science – to better study the land-sea interface area, where terrestrial and marine habitats meet.

In this edition:

 Welcome Note: Iseult Gillespie

Welcome to Issue 6 of the LandSeaLot Observer! As 2026 takes off, our project continues to forge connections between researchers, innovators and local communities to improve observations of the land-sea interface. In this edition, you’ll find stories of burgeoning collaborations between LandSeaLot researchers and partners including fishers, oyster farmers, boat racers and local authorities.

At the LandSeaLot Integration Labs, partners are continuing to pilot new methods, technologies and partnerships to advance the observation of the land-sea interface. For many of these sites, this includes experimenting with the deployment of low-cost sensors to observe local areas. These activities help inform project-wide efforts to address societal challenges at the land-sea interface.

Members of our Consortium will soon share their progress with the global community at this year’s Ocean Sciences Meeting in Glasgow. At this landmark event, LandSeaLot will host a very special Town Hall session inviting the global community to share perspectives and contribute to a Common Observation Strategy. This will be followed by the second LandSeaLot Integration Week in nearby Stirling, where the team at the Firth of Forth LandSeaLot Integration Lab will showcase the unique and beautiful landscapes in which their work takes place, inviting national stakeholders and community partners to share their perspectives. And further down the line, partners and stakeholders will convene in Brussels on 30 September for the first LandSeaLot conference: Land-Sea 2026: Shaping an Observation Strategy Together – mark your calendars now!

As you’ll see from the stories below, we all have a role to play in observing together. Many thanks for reading.

So far, LandSeaLot has focussed on European observation efforts. Through this special Town Hall, we seek global expertise and input towards the co-creation of a Common Observation Strategy for the land-sea interface area. OSM26 attendees are invited to join us, share your experiences and suggest improvements to existing observation efforts.

The second LandSeaLot Integration Week will bring together the project Consortium, members of the Research Infrastructure community, and representatives of the LandSeaLot Science Committee, Co-designer Forum, Citizen Science Hub and the European Space Agency to discuss the latest developments in our mission to advance observations of the land-sea interface area. Stay tuned!

Our community of LandSeaLot observers is growing! Check out the latest collaborations.
