The LandSeaLot Observer – Issue 4 – June 2025

ISSUE 4 – June 2025
LandSeaLot is a Horizon Europe project that seeks to integrate and enhance existing coastal observation efforts – including in-situ, satellite, modelling and citizen science – to better study the land-sea interface area, where terrestrial and marine habitats meet.
Welcome Note: Julia Vera

Welcome to Issue 4 of the LandSeaLot Observer!
As summer enters full swing, many of us are spending more time at the land-sea interface — be it for work and research, or recreation and relaxation. I find myself fortunate enough to do the same, and particularly welcome the chance to get my feet wet and breath in the ocean air while taking a long stroll at the beach. All this reminds me of just how relevant the land-sea interface is to all aspects of human life, and the great variety of people across Europe who live, work and play in coastal areas, deltas and estuaries.
People and communities who interact with land-sea interface areas have a significant role to play in LandSeaLot. To help meet our objective of improving, scaling up and streamlining observation of these areas, LandSeaLot is working to activate and deepen collaborations between researchers and civil society. These partnerships are taking place between LandSeaLot researchers and diverse groups: from fishers in Greece and students in Portugal, to canoers in France and marinas in the United Kingdom. With these collaborations in their planning and activation stages, and many others in the works, LandSeaLot is ramping up efforts to strengthen ties between researchers and local communities, with the aim of filling observation and knowledge gaps to address local, societal needs.
On this exciting front, we are delighted to announce the launch of the LandSeaLot Citizen Science Hub. The hub is a space to share ideas and initiatives that unlock the potential of citizen science for observing the land-sea interface. Ongoing conversations and activities are captured in a dedicated section on the project website, so feel free to visit it regularly to discover the emerging collaborations that LandSeaLot is shaping. A key part of the Citizen Science Hub will be the LandSeaLot Training Academy. The soon-to-be-launched Academy will offer resources related to LandSeaLot’s efforts to scale up citizen science activities.
What else? Over on social media, we’ve been delving into some key terms and bright ideas to share LandSeaLot with the public. If you are not following this conversation on LinkedIn yet, start today so you don’t miss out! Below, we’re featuring stories about new collaborations between LandSeaLot researchers and citizens, as well as general project successes, the latest Spotlight on the LandSeaLot Integration Labs and upcoming events.
Enjoy reading, and thank you for being a LandSeaLot Observer!
