The LandSeaLot Observer – Issue 9 – July 2026
ISSUE 9 – July 2026
LandSeaLot is a Horizon Europe project that seeks to integrate and enhance existing coastal observation efforts – including in-situ, satellite, modelling and citizen science – to better study the land-sea interface area, where terrestrial and marine habitats meet.

Welcome to the LandSeaLot Observer!
On a local level, summer is an excellent time to observe the changes happening across land-sea interface areas like beaches, river deltas, estuaries and bays. This is what LandSeaLot is all about: getting more communities connected to the observation and ultimately protection of coastal areas. Over the past few months, our team of researchers and community partners have been busy testing diverse observation methodologies to achieve our goals. Discover some of our recent collaborations and achievements below.
On an international level, ocean observation has been recognised as central to the health, security and future of Europe and the world. In June 2026, the European Commission published details of the OceanEye initiative to position the EU as the world’s leading provider of ocean intelligence. Integrating different methods and approaches to observation is essential to achieving this ambitious vision. When it comes to coastal areas, this is exactly what LandSeaLot is working to achieve.
Are you involved in the observation, study or management of the land-sea interface? We warmly invite you to register for the Land-Sea 2026 conference, taking place in Brussels in September 2026. The conference will be a key step in the development of LandSeaLot’s strategy for observing the land-sea interface in the years to come, including perspectives from all kinds of stakeholders. Danube Delta: LandSeaLot co-hosts community workshops with local NGO
GeoEcoMar and the Danube Delta and Coastal Area LandSeaLot Integration Lab (LIL) teamed up with local NGO “With Love, from Sulina” to deliver student workshops in Sulina, Danube Delta. These activities aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the complex and dynamic Danube Delta and Black Sea system.
Seine Estuary and Bay: field campaign complete
LandSeaLot researchers from Ifremer and the Seine Estuary and Bay LandSeaLot Integration Lab conducted observations aboard the RV Côtes de la Manche. The campaign focused on maintaining the estuary’s coastal observatory and calibrating cost-effective sensors against reference instruments and satellite data.
LandSeaLot helps enlarge European Blue Schools network
LandSeaLot researchers at the Danube Delta and Coastal Area LandSeaLot Integration Lab and GeoEcoMar supported a Bucharest high school’s application to the network of European Blue Schools, with a focus on helping students explore human impacts on water quality.
Ocean Sciences Meeting
22-27 February 2026, Glasgow, Scotland
