Citizen Science and LandSeaLot
Harnessing the Potential of Public Participation in Research
Let’s talk about citizen science!
This innovative approach involves public participation in scientific research, and it’s gaining worldwide recognition for its potential to expand the scope of scientific inquiry. In recent years, it has gained momentum with the advancement in information technology. Tools like mobile phones, apps, fast-speed internet and affordable sensors can facilitate data collection and reporting. By providing citizens with training to collect data and platforms to support researchers in other capacities, we can bridge observational gaps, enhancing our understanding of the natural world.
LandSeaLot will leverage these advancements, empowering citizen scientists with access to training and cost-effective technologies to contribute to the project’s observation work at the LandSeaLot Integration Labs, harnessing the potential of public participation in research to develop a common observation strategy for the land-sea interface area.
The LandSeaLot Citizen Empowerment Forum will provide a dedicated space for citizen scientists to share experiences, promote best practices, and secure a lasting LandSeaLot legacy. Stay tuned for updates on how to get involved.
In the meantime, did you know there is a form of citizen science that just about anyone can participate in regardless of their physical location?
Here are a few suggestions if you are interested in exploring how to get involved:
European Citizen Science Association (ECSA)
ECSA aims to foster the growth of the citizen science movement in Europe. It promotes collaboration, best practices, and the exchange of knowledge among citizen science projects. Website: ECSA
SciStarter Europe
SciStarter is a platform that connects people to citizen science projects, and its European branch focuses on projects across Europe. It provides tools, resources, and opportunities for participation in various scientific endeavours. Website: SciStarter Europe
Citizen Science Network Austria
This network promotes citizen science in Austria and provides a platform for projects, researchers, and citizens to collaborate. They offer resources, events, and support for citizen science initiatives. Website: Citizen Science Network Austria
European Space Agency (ESA) Citizen Science Projects
ESA hosts several citizen science projects that allow the public to contribute to space science and exploration. These projects range from analysing satellite data to participating in astronomy research. Website: ESA Citizen Science
Zooniverse
Zooniverse is a global platform that hosts a wide variety of citizen science projects. While it is not Europe-specific, many European projects use Zooniverse to engage the public in their research. Website: Zooniverse
Open Air Laboratories (OPAL)
OPAL is a UK-based citizen science initiative that encourages people to explore, study, and record the world around them. They offer various environmental surveys and educational resources. Website: OPAL
